Juniors

Our juniors took part in the Shropshire Young Athletes League at Bridgnorth. In the U11 Boys race Joe Gray was 3rd and 3rd overall in the series. Hattie Jones was 1st and lies 2nd overall in the U11 Girls race. Jessie Prentice was 20th. In the U13 Boys Idris Jones was 4th. In the U13 Girls Megan Turner was 5th, Emma Clarke 9th and Emily Newcombe 32nd. In the U15 Boys Guy Gregory was 1st and Russell Adams 6th. The boys’ team was 3rd overall. In the U15 Girls Katherine Lovejoy was 22nd.

Seniors

The Mortimer Forest race was a big success, with a record entry of 304 finishers, and many post-race complimentary comments. Despite suffering from a heavy cold, Russell organised everything and worked hard on the day to make sure things ran smoothly. A number of Club members took part in the race; notably Simon Norwood in 26th place and Colin Lancaster 29th. The race made around £1,000 profit for the Club.
A number of Club members took part in the Telford 10k, which was a Club Championship race and which filled up about a month previously.

November 2008 News

Juniors

The juniors took part in the South Shropshire Schools Championships at Much Wenlock, where Idris Jones and Connor Jones were 1st and 2nd for the Year 7 Boys; Emma Clarke and Chloe Hughes were 1st and 2nd for the Year 7 Girls; Megan Turner was 6th for the Year 8/9 Girls; Ryan Lockley was 1st, Guy Gregory 3rd and Russell Adams 4th for the Year 10/11 Boys.
All except Megan were selected to run for Shropshire at a schools Inter-Counties friendly match at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. There were 8 counties in the event, so competition was tough. Idris Jones was 32nd and Conner Jones 44th out of 88 runners. Emma Clarke was 40th and Chloe Hughes 69th out of 89 runners. Guy Gregory was 86th out of 94 runners.
At the Shropshire Young Athletes League at Much Wenlock Hattie Jones was 1st and Jodie Beddow 5th in the U/11 Girls race. Joe Gray was 5th in the U/11 Boys race. Emma Clarke was 5th in the U/13 Girls race and Idris Jones 4th in the U/13 Boys race.
Guy Gregory was 2nd and Russell Adams 5th in the U/15 Boys race.
Seniors
Mick Ligema, Russell, John Lyden, Sue Williams and Vaughan Griffiths took part in the 7 mile 3 Peaks Race at Corndon on 16th November, one of the Club Championship series.
At the Wrekin Wrecker fell race Jane Rowlands was 3rd lady. Russell, unfortunately, got injured whilst warming up and was unable to take part. John Lyden ran to add to his high number of races already run this year.
Jeremy Bolwell and Dave Hurst ran in the Elan Valley 10 mile race on 23rd November. Dave was 31st in a time of 76.36mins. and Jeremy was 47th in 81.57 mins.
Russell, Jane and Denis Rowlands and Phil Clarke and daughter Emma took part in the 9m time trial race over the Long Mynd to Stiperstones.

Cross-country League

The second race of the series was organised by our Club at the High Vinnalls. The weather was fine and there was a good turn-out from the Club. Simon Norwood was 10th, with Greg Smith 18th, Martin Callaghan 22nd and Matthew Trounson 26th, completing the first team. The men’s team moved up to 4th overall.
In the ladies race Gemma was 6th, Sonia (in her first cross-country race after the birth of her second baby) 7th, Jane Thomas 11th, Ann Kerby-Collins 12th to make up the first team. The ladies were in 2nd place overall.
The third race at Croft Castle last Sunday had a disappointing result, with some of our best runners missing. However, Simon Norwood was 6th, his best run over this course for a few years, Matthew Trounson was 25th, Paul Elliott 29th and Steward Hendren 44th, to make up the men’s first team.
In the ladies’ race Juliet was 14th, Shelly 18th, Zara 19th and Sue Williams 30th. The men’s team dropped to 7th overall and the women’s to 4th overall.

October 2008 News

Juniors

Our juniors have run in two races in the Shropshire Young Athletes cross-country League. Hattie Jones was 3rd in the U11 girls race at Newport, and 5th at Oswestry. Joe Gray won the U11 boys race at Newport and was 10th at Oswestry, where the fields of runners were much larger.
In the U13 girls race at Newport, Emma Clarke was 3rd, and 4th at Oswestry. Idris Jones was 3rd in the U13 boys race at Newport and 5th at Oswestry. Russell Adams was 4th in the U15 boys race at Newport and Guy Gregory was 6th. At Oswestry Russell was 5th and Guy again 6th. Chris Lovejoy was 7th in the Newport U17 boys race.

Seniors

Iain Prentice and Phil Clarke took part in the 50 mile Long Mynd Hike on 4th October. The weather was terrible, especially during the night, but both managed to finish before conditions worsened. Iain took 12hrs.20mins, 3.5 hours quicker than last year! Phil finished about one hour ahead of Iain.
Newish member, Sharon Clarke, ran the Great North Run in 2hr.14mins. Sharon also ran in the Great South Run in Portsmouth, finishing the 10miles in 1hr.34mins.
The Breden Hills 7m race saw Jane and Russell Mapp, Colin, Phil and Vaughan Griffiths taking part. Vaughan and Sue also ran in Presteigne’s 2 Rivers Knill Dash on 5th October.
Simon and Jane Mapp took part in the Snowdon Marathon on a weekend of terrible weather conditions (remember the flooding in Cumbria?) The wind and rain lasted throughout the race, in gale force conditions. Simon still managed a creditable 3hrs31mins,to finish in 107th place in a field of 1,228 runners. Jane finished in a time of 4hrs.40mins. in 792nd place.

Cross-country League

The first race of the season saw our Club turn out 20 runners at Holme Lacy. Simon finished in 8th position, with the first team completed by Paul Elliott(32nd), Russell(34th) and Stuart Hendren(42nd). The team was 7th overall. We also fielded 2 other men’s teams.
The ladies team comprised Gemma(8th) Juliet (19th) and Leanne Gregory(21st). The team finished 5th overall. The second team comprised Zara, Sue Williams and Sharon Clarke.
The teams were missing several of our more-accomplished runners. Mick Ligema ran into a tree during the race and had to go to hospital and Zara lost her shoes in the thick mud and had to be dug out, ending her chances of a good position in the race. This course is always muddy, but this was the worst anyone had experienced.

September 2008 News

Seniors

The Wistanstow walk/run, mainly organised by Phil Clarke in aid of Wistanstow School and the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund, had 92 entries. The route is 26 miles off-road. Russell Mapp was 2nd in 5hr24mins., Iain Prentice was 3rd. Don Lovejoy and son, Darren Ellis, Jane Mapp and Jo Sharp also took part.
Colin Lancaster, Mick Ligema, Russell Mapp, John Lyden and Graham Wood took part in the Source of the Severn race, the first of the Maldwyn Harriers Winter mid-Wales off-road series.
Neil and Ann Collins were the only Club members to complete the 18mile Stretton Skyline fell race.
The Seven Bridges 10k in Shrewsbury took place on a lovely sunny day on 21st September. The route follows the River Severn and crosses the river seven times. John Lyden and Ann Cruse were the only Club members competing in an entry of over 100.

August 2008 News

Seniors

At the Westhope race in the Herefordshire Summer Off-road League on 30th July, Simon Norwood was 4th, Martin Callagham 13th, Penny Priest 39th, Iain Prentice 47th, Rene Francois 62nd and Jason Stuchberry 79th. The team was lying 6th after this event. At the final race at Shobdon on 13th August the team improved their position and finished 4th overall for the series of 4 race. Simon was 5th, Martin 15th, Graham Wood 35th, Penny 46th, John Lyden 53rd, Rene 62nd and Jason 79th.
A few members went to the Montgomery Hill Run on 15th August on a humid evening. Over the 4.5 mile course John Lyden was 30th in 35.21, Sue Williams 60th in 44.26 and Ann Cruse 65th in 47.23 (1stLV60). There were 73 finishers. At the presentation in the local hotel there were a lot of category prizes and free sandwiches. A recommended race in a friendly atmosphere.
There was a good turn-out from the Club at the Purslow Show 5mile run. After several years of trying, Simon Norwood (in photo below) finally won the race and was awarded the Whitehead Cup. Richard Hornsby, now 1st claim for Croft Ambrey, was 3rd and Mick Ligema 4th. Chris Lovejoy was 1st U16 and Emma Clarke 3rd U16 and first U16 female. Ex-Club member Lydia Morgan was 1st lady. July 2008 News

Junior Athletes

Catherine Lovejoy ran in the Shropshire Schools Championships at Shrewsbury and won the Year 8 800m race in a time of 2min.44.01, which was a p.b. and her first gold medal.

Seniors

Russell organised the Callow 5 mile fell race on 6th July from Little Stretton, and there were 64 entries in very wet and muddy conditions after a day of rain. Only John Lyden and Phil Clarke ran from the Club, but there was a good turn-out of members to help marshal, etc.
At the second cross-country race of the Hereford summer League, the team dropped to 5th place overall. Simon Norwood was 6th, Martin Callaghan 16th, Matt Trounson 22nd and Penny Priest 47th to complete our team. Iain Prentice and Jason Stuchberry also ran.
On 13th July Iain Prentice ran the Wyre Forest half-marathon in a time of 1hr51mins., after competing in the 25 mile Ludlow Challenge Walk the day before. Others taking part were Neil and Ann Collins, Shelly Perkins and Jane Thomas.

June 2008 News

Junior Athletes

In the Shropshire Schools Championships at Telford, Guy Gregory was 2nd in the 1500m Intermediate Boys race and Russell Adams was 3rd. Megan Lloyd was 2nd in her 1500m race and Tom Everett 2nd in his 1500m race in a time of 4.55.07mins. Ceirian Lancaster won the 400m race in a time of 60secs. She was 3rd in the Midlands U20 1500m. race in a time of 4.46mins.

Seniors

The third of the Hereford 5k series races had only Martin Callaghan and Ann Cruse competing from the Club. A large group of charity runners increased the usual entry. Martin completed the run in 19.20mins. and Ann in 26.12, a small improvement on the first 2 races.

At the Newtown 5k race the following day, Anne Thorpe ran 23.42mins. and Ann Cruse 27.02, in a entry of about 50 runners.

The first of the summer League cross-country races at Monkhall Farm, near Hereford, had a good turn-out from the Club, making up 2.5 teams. Penny Priest was 3rd lady. The first Ludlow team comprising Simon Norwood (6th), Matthew Trounson (18th), Martin Callaghan (19th) and Penny (35th) finished in 4th place. Other members competing were John Lyden (48th), Graham Wood (55th), Shelley Perks (60th), Jason Stuchbury (77th), Jane Mapp (81st), and Don Lovejoy (83rd). The next race in the series is on Wednesday, 2nd July at Kinnersley.

The Wye Valley 10k on 29th June was another in the Club Championship series, but only Dave Thompson and Ann Cruse took part. There were about 100 runners, on a cool, but dry day. Dave finished in a time of 55.05mins. and Ann in 56.39 mins.

Graham Wood and Chris Good took part in the Three Peaks Challenge last week over Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell. They were in a team of 6 with runners from other local Clubs. 66 teams took part and their team finished 11th in a time of 17.26hours. They won the Vets shield and a prize as the oldest team. Graham said conditions on Ben Nevis were horrendous, with 9” of snow on the top and -12oC at night! It rained all day on Snowdon and was foggy and cold on Scafell.

Barry Wilson was placed 3rd in the MV55 category at the London Marathon, and he received an award in recognition of this.

April / May 2008 News

Junior Athletes

Our junior runners again did well at the Shropshire County Championships at Telford. In the U20 age group Cerian Lancaster won the 400m. race in 60.02secs. a pb. She also won the 1,500m in 4m.49.04 (a Shropshire record), and the 3,000m in 10m38.04, another pb

In the U17 age group Megan Lloyd won the 1,500 in 5.38mins. and was 2nd in 3,000m.

Tom Everett was 3rd in 3,000m. in 10.42mins. and was 6th in the 800m in 2.23.06mins. Catherine Lovejoy was 9th in the 800m. in 2.51.02 and ran 1,500m in 5.07.05mins. She also long jumped 3.39m.

In the U15 age group Guy Gregory was 2nd in the 3,000m. in 11.07mins. and 3rd in the 1,500m. in 5.07.05mins. In the U13 age group Ben Ashcroft won the 800m. in 2.32.08mins. and the 1,500m. in 5.05.01mins.

The Juniors won a total of 6 gold medals at these Championships.

Seniors

Although the Haughmond Hill handicap 9 mile race was part of the Club Championship series, only Simon Norwood from the Club took part. He finished 8th of 160 runners in a time of 57.02. He said the race was very enjoyable and would recommend it for next year.

The Newtown 10k race was held on a very hot day on 11th May. Barry Wilson was first V55 in 40.04mins., Ann Cruse was first LV60 in 58.09 and Margaret Braddick finished in 65.08, with about 75 runners in the race. Dave Hurst and Jeremy Bolwell ran the Tewkesbury half-marathon on the same day, on a hilly course.

At the second Hereford 5k race of the series, Dave Hurst ran 21.19mins. and Ann Cruse 26.52 mins., both slightly improving on the first race.

Shelly Perkins and Jane Thomas ran the Windermere Marathon on 18th May, finishing in 4hr.16mins.

About 300 runners took part in the Hereford half-marathon, including Simon Norwood, Neil and Ann Collins, Jeremy Bolwell, Dave Hurst and Sharon Clarke. Simon finished in 1hr25.56mins., his best time for a while.

Junior Athletes

The past month has been a quiet time for the juniors before the start of the track season, but at the Wrekin fell race Emma Clarke won in her age group, and Guy Gregory was 2nd in his age group.

Seniors

The Radnor Ramble is a 25miles self-navigation event held on 5th April, starting and finishing in Knighton. Jane Rowlands won the event outright, and Jane and Russell Mapp walked it to finish 5th and 6th.

Ann Cruse was the only Club member at the Presteigne 10k, where she was 1st LV60 in a time of 55.22mins. There were 73 entries.

At the London Marathon on the same day, Barry Wilson finished in a very good time of 2hr50.26mins, to be 4th in the M55 age group. Dave Hurst, who had the Club entry, finished in 3hr50.40, Ann Kerby-Collins in 3hr36.26mins and Jeremy Bolwell in 4hr24.41mins.

The Shobdon 6 mile race in Shobdon Wood on 20th April had a good entry from the Club, in a field of over 100. Simon Norwood was 5th in 37.20mins, Mick Ligema 14th in 40.10mins. And 1stMV50, Paul Elliott 44.07mins., Neil Collins 45.50mins., Shelly Perkins 49.18mins., Ann Kerby-Collins 49.24mins., Graham Wood 49.55mins., Vaughan Griffiths 53.49mins., Anne Thorpe 53.58mins., Jane Mapp 54.33mins., Don Lovejoy 55.26mins., Sue Williams 63.12.

There was a large entry at the first Hereford 5k of the series on 24th April, but only Dave Hurst and Ann Cruse ran there in times of 21.20 and 27.36 respectively.

Junior Athletes

Our Juniors have been out in force again and acquitting themselves well. At the U11's Championships in Shrewsbury Jodie Bellow was 2nd U10 Girl; Joe Gray was 2nd U10 Boy; Idris Jones was 2nd U11 Boy, Conner Jones 4th and Jacob Bellingham-Albert 15th; Emma Clarke was 3rd U11 Girl and Emily Newcombe 8th. All raced really well.

At the English Schools Championship in Liverpool where all Counties of England are represented, Cerian Lancaster was 70th, Zara Burford 286th and Guy Gregory 290th. There are 8 runners per team.

At the Inter-Counties Championship in Nottingham Cerian Lancaster was 77th, Katherine Lovejoy 296th and Megan Lloyd 196th in the Girls races. Guy Gregory was 268th, Matthew Trounson 254th and Ben Ashcroft 253rd in the Boys races. From the Club, we had 9 runners selected to run for Shropshire this year.

At the National Cross-Country Championships Cerian Lancaster was 76th, Russell Adams 240th, Guy Gregory 232nd and Matthew Trounson 246th.

Seniors

A number of members took part in the Ironbridge half-marathon race on 9th March, there were 540 finishers. Simon Norwood was 23rd in a time of 1hr28.12. Ann Kerby-Collins' time was 1h41.40 in 128th position, Neil Collins 1hr43.18, Shelly Perkins 1hr51.35, Jane Thomas 1hr51.35, Don Lovejoy 2hr04.18, Carl Morris 2hr.10.18.

On the same day, Tony Hewson ran in the 8mile Fitness First race at Stourport and finished in 1hr28mins, after getting lost in the last half mile!

Jane Mapp ran in the Ras y Aran race on a very windy, snowy day and finished in 114th place in a time of 1hr54.54.

Simon Norwood and Mick Ligema went to a new 10km race organised for a childrens' charity on the Garnons Estate, about 6 miles from Hereford. There were 69 entries and Simon was 2nd in a time of 45.56mins. Mick was 8th. Simon said the race was well-organised and would recommend it for next year. Although there were no prizes, there was a wonderful supply of cakes at the end!

February 2008 News

Junior Athletes

Colin Lancaster took a group to the National Cross-Country races at Alton Towers on 23rd February. Cerian Lancaster was 76th in the U20 age group (she was one of the youngest), as was Matthew Trounson who was 246th in the U17 age group; also, Guy Gregory 232nd and Russell Adams 240th in the U15 age group. There were about 350 runners in each race.

Seniors

The Stourbridge Stagger 10mile race took place on 3rd February, with 381 finishers. Simon Norwood was 10th in a p.b. time of 69.04. Neil Collins ran 81.10mins, Ann Kerby-Collins 87.25mins and Jane Thomas 94.10. In the accompanying ladies-only 6km race Shelly Perkins was 4th in a time of 34.09 and Ann Cruse 27th in 43.06.

The final race of the Herefordshire Cross-Country League took place at Presteigne. The men finished 6th team overall and the ladies were 2nd. Simon Norwood was 6th in the Presteigne race, Gemma Morgan was 4th in the ladies race, with Shelly Perkins 5th. Ann Kerby-Collins completed the ladies team. Mick Ligema was 1st V50, with Neil Collins 3rd V50. John Lyden was 4th V45. Ann Kerby-Collins was 3rd LV40 and Tony Hewson 2nd V70.

In the Ennstone 7mile race in Telford Town Park on 17th February Carl Morris was 96th in 55.04mins, Ann Cruse 164th in 64.36 and Margaret Braddick 183rd in 70.28. There were 194 finishers.

At the 11mile Longmynd Valleys race Penny Priest was 6th in her age group. Russell took 5h 3 9mins. to complete the South Shropshire Circular 26 miles walk/run, about 20 minutes behind the leaders. Others from the Club taking part were Phil Clarke, Iain Prentice, Jo Sharp, Jane Mapp and Terry and Angie Davies.

January 2008 News

Junior Athletes

In the Shropshire County Championships at Bridgnorth in early January, Cerian Lancaster won the U/17 race, retaining her title. Megan Lloyd was 4th and both girls were selected for the Inter-Counties Championships. Guy Gregory was 3rd in the U/15 boy's race and selected for the Inter-Counties. With Russell Adams in 5th place, Tom Everett 8th and Chris Walker 13th, the boys won the team prize. In the U/13 boy's race Oliver Preece was 7th. In the U/13 girl's race Katherine Lovejoy was 4th, and has been selected for the Inter-Counties Championships at Nottingham. Matthew Trounson was 4th in the U/17 boy's race and was selected for the Inter-Counties.

At the Shropshire Schools Championships at Much Wenlock on 19th January, Megan Turner was 10th in the Year7 race and selected to represent Shropshire Schools. Oliver Preece was 8th in his Year7 race, Russell Adams was 6th, Guy Gregory 10th in the Year8/9 and Tom Everett was 10th in Year10/11. All were selected to represent Shropshire Schools.

At the Herefordshire Schools Championships Lisa Hill was 4th for Year8/9 and selected to represent Herefordshire Schools, also Matthew Trounson 4th and Johan Hill 6th for Year 10/11.

At the Midland Championships races at Leamington Spa on 26th January Katherine Lovejoy was 102nd in the U/13 girl's race and Guy Gregory 86th in the U/15 boy's race.

Emma Clarke, daughter of Phil, was 1st in the Stanbury Splash Junior Fell Race at Haworth, West Yorkshire, on 26th January in the U/12 age group.

Seniors

A large number of Club members took part in the Morning After Race on New Year's Day at Church Stretton organised by Terry Davies. More than 300 runners, walkers and dogs participated in the 5 mile event on a misty cold day. Junior runner Emma Clarke was 2nd u/11 in the race; other results are not known.

Cross-Country League

At the Herefordshire League cross-country race at Monkhall Farm on 13th January, the men's team slipped to 7th place overall, but the ladies' team remains 2nd and in line for a county prize.

The men's first team comprised Simon Norwood in 10th place, Mick Ligema 20th, Neil Collins 38th and Andrew Spreadborough 45th. Other members taking part were Graham Wood, Carl Morris, James Brisbane, Topher Morgan and Tony Hewson. The ladies' team comprised Gemma Morgan in 6th place, Ann Kerby-Collins 8th (3rd V50) and Shelly Perkins 12th.
