Race News - December

In the 3rd Cross-Country League race at Holme Lacy, both first teams were depleted by injury and a clash of fixtures. Simon Norwood had a good run and finished in 7th place, with David George 26th, Richard Hornsby 28th and David Blenkharn 29th, making up the A Team. Other Club runners were John Lyden in 30th, Graham Wood 38th, Darren Craddock 43rd, Robert Monteith, Clive Richardson and Tony Hewson. The A team has dropped to 5th place overall.

Due to injury, the ladies team was without Jane Rowlands. The remaining 3 ladies fought hard, with Ann Thorpe finishing 8th, Joy Miles 14th and Jo Sharp 22nd. They are in 4th place overall.

Our own fixture, the Mortimer Forest hill race was held on a cold, foggy morning. Fortunately, once the runners got on to higher ground, the sun came out and there were many favourable comments at the end of the race on the course and venue, in spite of very muddy conditions. The race entry was another record, with 345 finishers. First runner from Ludlow was Simon Norwood in 40th place and a time of 82.06. New member, Fern Cotterill was 71st in 86.58. Other members taking part were Richard Hornsby, David George, Derren Craddock, Clive Richardson and Jack White, in his first (and longest) race for several years. Thanks to everyone who turned out to help on the day and especially to Russell for all his hard work in making this race such a success every year.

Race News - November

Tony Hewson ran in the Eccleshall 10 mile race on 6th November in a time of 1hr.36mins. He found the course very hilly, mainly on farm tracks and narrow lanes, with a good hill at the finish. Parts of the route were flooded after recent rains, but the race had over 250 entries.

There was a good turn-out from the Club for the second Cross-country League race at High Vinnalls, but we were without an injured Mick Ligema and some others. Simon Norwood finished in third place when the leaders were sent off course on the first lap. Mark Warren was 16th, Martin Callagham 19th and Andrew Spreadborough 22nd to complete the A team and rise to 3rd place in the League. The B team consisted of John Lydon, David George, Richard Hornsby and David Blenkharn, and they rose to 6th place from 8th.

Jane Rowlands continues to improve after her injury and she won the ladies race. Our other ladies team members were Anne Thorpe, Joy Miles, Jo Sharpe and Sue Williams. The ladies team is currently 2nd in the rankings. 10 other members of the Club also competed.

The following week Simon, Russell, Jane, Graham and Richard ran in the Suicide Six on a very cold, frosty day. This is a fast, flat course, with a water crossing. There were 612 entries and Simon finished 22nd in 43.29mins, Russell 27th in 44.04mins., Richard 58th in 46.59mins.

Russell was first male vet at the tough Stiperstones race last Sunday.

Junior Section - South Shropshire Runners win Gold!

Ludlow Runners took to the track recently for the Shropshire Championships at Oakengates, Telford and had their best ever results. Two athletes, Jaala Kenchington and Cerian Lancaster emulated Kelly Holmes’ Olympic feat of winning both the 800m and 1500m races. Jaala of Moor Park School in the Under 13 Girls and Cerian of Church Stretton in the Under 15 Girls. Both were convincing winners in the longer races but showed great determination to see off the opposition in close run 800m races.

The most exciting race was won by Adam Clarke in the Under 13 Boys 1500m, he was overtaken three times on the last lap but never gave up to clinch Gold in his fastest ever time 5 minutes 24 secs. Adam also took bronze in the 800m.

In the Under 17 Boys races, Carl Price of Community College Bishop’s Castle came second in the 1500m and then just 4 days later went one better to cruise to Gold in the 3000m in a very impressive 9minutes 52 seconds.

Megan Lloyd from Minton running for Church Stretton School came 5th in the 800m and 4th in the 1500m but with still a year to go in the Under 15 age group she should be in the hunt for medals next year. Zara Burford of Ludlow School continued her return to form in both races, running season’s best performances.

Two runners in Year 7 from Ludlow School were making their debuts on the track at these Championships and showed great promise for the future. Katie Ayers finished 4th and Erin Keough 5th in the 800m behind their winning team mate.

Chief coach Colin Lancaster said, ‘It was our best ever performance. There seems to be such natural talent in South Shropshire and our training group now includes pupils from all the local schools. To come away from the County races with so many of the medals, shows how far we have come in such a short time. If any youngsters want to start running with us, they are always welcome, whether to get fit or race. We meet at Ludlow Leisure Centre every Wednesday at 6-30 p.m., or I can be contacted at Community College Bishop’s Castle where I teach.”
