p1050792On Sunday, 11 September, a coach load of Ludlow Runners, and our sister club CMRC, headed deep into the beautiful Welsh countryside to tackle the infamous Lake Vrynwy Half Marathon. The route, a flat and fast course, is set in a stunning location and, with the sun shining, the teams produced some outstanding performances. Jamie Shingler was the first home for the club in just 01:18:43, finishing 27th out of 1800 racers, then Amy Fulford came 2nd in her age category in a time of 01:41:46. Our leading men and women were pushed hard by our own club members though: hot on Jamie’s heels, Stuart Booker set a PB with a sub 1:30 p1050793and Paul Francis narrowly missed out that milestone by just a few seconds. Meanwhile, Shannon Gilbert was a mere 36 seconds behind Amy as Ludlow Runners started to flood the finish line. Full results are are available here.

The great performances didn’t end there, though. There were many half marathon debutants taking part: Paul Parker, Wendy Booker, Emma Gittens, Stella Stilwell and Jenny Nash to name only a few. It was also great to see club stalwart John Lyden make a welcome return to distance running, he has been missed.

As author of this article, I had the pleasure of being at the finish line to witness everyone home. As frustrating as it is watching other people race, it was wonderful to witness the elation, and empathise with occasional disappointment, on people’s faces. However, nothing could have prepared me for Clive Richardson’s contortion as he stormed through the finish chute. He claimed a brilliant 5th place in his age category but that face will be with me to my grave 0_0. It’s lucky for all concerned that the camera missed it.

Anyway, it was a great day out topped off by a “refreshment stop” at the plough in Wistanstow. The club hope to have many more of these “away days” in the future.

Next up in the running club calendar is the Cross Country league, starting next month, hope to see you all there!
