Report by Paul Francis

Sunday 12th June saw the second Beast of Bitterley race take place, and results can be found at the end of this report. After the last years success, this cross country challenge that includes racing across rough common land, through running water and up a 1749ft climb from the village of Bitterley to the summit of Titterstone Clee was brought back for all challengers by joint organisers, Ludlow Runners and Bitterley C.E. Primary School PTA.

Once reaching the highest point of the 8KM course, competitors would normally be able to enjoy long views over Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Wales, but unfortunately for them, they faced the extra challenge of poor weather that included rain and cloud that blocked any fore mentioned views.

Ludlow Runners were well represented on the day, with 26 of the 51competitors being club members. Many of the competitors arrived on the day with the single aim of completing this very difficult course that started in the village outside Bitterley School before the long, very steep climb for the first third of the race before enjoying long downhills and flat sections returning to the village in damp conditions. All starters were successful in completing the route.

Other competitors however came to challenge for trophies that were sponsored by local business’ Teme Leisure and Bentleys Wine Merchants of Ludlow. Jamie Shingler of Ludlow Runners, was one such runner, and was successful in retaining the trophy that he won last year, and although the weather was against him, he managed to record an official course record of 40:41minutes beating second placed Andrew Salt (Ludlow Runners) by over a minute!!
Matthew Yapp, also Ludlow Runners, coming in third overall but first junior male in a field that included runners from many running clubs from Bridgnorth, Wyre Forest, Malvern and others as well as Ludlow.

Amy Fulford followed up her recent success in the Herefordshire cross country series for Ludlow Runners, by taking first place in the ladies race 49:06 with second placed Sarah Armstrong finishing 53:18. Ludlow’s Viv Dempsey finishing a brilliant third in the ladies section with 61:44

Other Ludlow Runners that tamed ‘The Beast’ included Craig Collier and Paul Lewis who both finished the top ten overall positions. Dan Pavitt, John Lyden, Clive Richardson and Tina Cartwright all winning in their relevant age group categories with many other club members succeeding in completing the course.
